Lions of the East: Review
Directed, produced and written by Aleksander Petakov (On the Trail of… Champ) Lions of the East is a thought provoking and non traditional cryptid documentary. Petakov directs his camera towards New England and the issue of the presence of mountain lions in that region of the continental United States. While the official statement is that no mountain lions exist there, an increasing number of people disagree.
Lions of the East is one of those documentaries that really makes you question the official word of the US government. While not conspiratorial in nature, one finds it hard not to struggle with the stark contrast of what’s on paper and what's slinking into people’s backyards. When people’s animals have been attacked and blood and fur samples have been confirmed to be that of a mountain lion, how can the government continue to say that they’re not there?
It’s this issue Petakov navigates by interviewing members of Fish and Game, witnesses and amateur investigators to create a mosaic of the mountain lion phenom of New England. The evidence presented in this hour length documentary is enough to leave even the hardest skeptics scratching their heads. I highly recommend this documentary to fans of Small Town Monsters and Cryptozoology documentaries in general, because it highlights how even a known animal can remain elusive even in highly populated areas.
